Gap Inc / Old Navy

Reshape Old Navy’s workplace into a space that blends home & creativity with productivity.

OPPORTUNITY

Old Navy was returning to the office in a new hybrid workflow. They wanted an inviting art filled space with moments of joy and discovery that sparked a new wave of creativity. We needed to create a natural flow through the space that guided teams into collaborative zones containing home comforts and amenities.

We were briefed 3 key spaces that needed a lift.

  • The elevator entrance

  • A passage way

  • A collaborative open space “living room”

Stakeholder Interview Findings

  • Make the transition from remote to hybrid seamless and welcome.

  • Create an inspirational zone that is inviting.

  • there should be a clear path from elevator to “Living Room”

  • Capture the energy that our offices had.

Employee Interview Findings

  • Lighting felt too corporate

  • “Open Work” didn’t provide any privacy

  • The new office in the Gap Inc. headquarters did have the same “magic” as the original office.

  • “Its ok if our desks are close to common work areas”

On-Site Review of Space

Insights & Opportunities

Through our interviews and review of the space we uncovered some imaginative opportunities to activate in the spaces to bring joy and comfort.

Enter

Insight

  • Dark space with medium dark wood.

  • Recent way finding installation that was anchored by a sculptural number made from fabric.

  • Echo from adjacent mezzanine.

  • Informed of art collection owned by Old Navy from previous office.

Opportunity

  • Showcase employee, community, current collection and commissioned new art from regional artists.

  • Paint to lighten up the lobby space.

  • Hanging art naturally will act as sound dampener.

  • light temperature to feel more natural.

Through

Insight

  • Floor and shape of space created a cavernous echo chamber.

  • Not enough space to be used as a casual seating area

  • Stakeholders wanted to use the space to showcase corporate slogans/ethos

Opportunity

  • Lenticular wall to act as a graphic canvas doubling as acoustic panels

  • Using a color shifting light to activate patterns and slogans on wall as to add a different look through-out the day

  • Cork flooring to soften the approach of foot steps.

Living

Insight

  • Lack of privacy in co-working spaces

  • Natural light is a non-negotiable.

  • Employees wanted the “Peace Hand “ from their previous workplace but it didn’t fit here.

  • “Zoom” TVs were in place for teammates still full-time remote or needing extra time to adjust.

Opportunity

  • Create cozy “living-rooms” to bring home into the workplace and create new, private environments.

  • The “Peace Hand” was recreated in a triptych that was split between the 3 floors of Old Navy.

  • Marine grade cord was used as wall material to add color, allow for natural light to flow and create walls for privacy.

Takeaway

  • Light has a huge impact on people joy in the day to day, consciously or subconsciously.

  • After a full tour of the space our team pitched a broadened scope to activate our suggestions and designs to.

  • Art and light naturally draws people through a space.
